Director Brenda BarrieBrenda Barrie, B.A., M.A.,
Executive Director

Brenda joins Beth Shir Sholom as the new Executive Director.  She comes with many years involvement in the Jewish community.  Her background is rich in every aspect of Jewish life including communications, learning, programming, public relations and various activities.  She is creative and innovative in event planning, advertising, fund raising and with volunteer and membership programs   

Recently, she was a founding director of Shalom Baltimore, a cooperative program of Jewish Family Service (JFS) and the Jewish Community Center (JCC) where she was involved in all facets of their programs and affiliations.  As Area Director of Hadassah in Southern California, she managed programs and wrote grants, developed new membership initiatives and worked with volunteers and other Hadassah groups.

Brenda is a published poet and novelist. She has also written newspaper and magazine features, edited newspapers and magazines, and written innumerable news releases and speeches in her roles as community relations director of various Jewish organizations. 

She has a Master of Arts in Creative Writing and Religion from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Winnipeg with studies carried out at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  You can read more about Brenda at www.brendabarrie.com.

Karen Susman Waldman,
Director of Education and Youth

Karen has been in the field of informal and formal Jewish  Education for the past 23 years. Growing up in the Northeast, she was very involved with her Synagogue and her youth groups, U.S.Y. and BBYO. She attended Rider University in Trenton , New Jersey . Karen received a Certificate of Jewish Study from the Melton Center for Jewish Study of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, attended the Beit Midrash Program at Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem , and has completed her certification through HUC for Synagogue Management.

 

Karen has led seven NFTY trips, most recently joining in the summer of 2004 to Prague and Poland for the NFTY L'Dor va'Dor program. The City of Los Angeles and the German Government have recognized Karen for her work with the German Consulate facilitating a German/Jewish student exchange program between the cities of Los Angeles and Heidelberg , Germany . She was instrumental in leading a task force in the City of Miami Beach working to raise the age limit for entrance into South Beach Clubs from 18 to 21 Karen has been awarded life membership to NFTY Southern Florida for all her years of service.

Karen is happily married to Jeff Waldman, whom she met at Temple Kol Tikvah at Shabbat Services. Karen and Jeff, Karen's two boys Evan and Bryan, and her stepdaughter Jackie, live in West Hills. In what little spare time she has, she loves to read and hang out with her family.

Marsha Newstat,
Early Childhood Center Director

Marsha Newstat has been employed at Beth Shir Sholom since September 2002. She has over 30 years of experience in Education and Administration. She has worked for public, private, non-profit and corporate schools.

Marsha received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from UCLA and her Master of Science Degree in Education is from Pepperdine University. She specialized in Early Childhood Education and holds four credentials. She is a member of the Santa Monica Early Childhood Task Force, an NAEYC validator a past president and current board member of the Association for Early Jewish Education.


She has been married to Gene for over thirty years. Together they have raised one Bruin (Joshua) and one Trojan (Rachel). Josh is an attorney and Rachel works in Entertainment Law. Marsha is a die-hard sports fan who loves the Bruins, Lakers and Dodgers.

In her spare time she enjoys reading, cooking, traveling and going to plays and movies.

David Katz
General Services Supervisor

David Katz has been with Beth Shir Sholom since 1998. David also teaches Israeli Dancing on Monday nights. 

He manages and oversees all facility needs for temple events and services.  If you have any questions on any aspect of facilities such as setting up for an event or service, audio visual needs or special room arrangements, please contact him at david.katz@bethshirsholom.org.


Nona Cloud
Office Manager

Nona Cloud has been with Beth Shir Sholom since 1994.  Besides making sure everything at the temple runs smoothly, she can answer any question or get the information you need.  If you have any news or matters that would go in our monthly Koleynu, or Friday night hand outs, please contact her at nona.cloud@bethshirsholom.org.
