Convictions can be based on evidence derived from torture, hearsay and secret evidence. Many of the accused were held in secret prisons, denied access to lawyers for years and tortured. The proceedings are subject to unlawful political influence and, after years without a single trial completed, are now being rushed through to sway public opinion before the November elections. Dear Friends, I am proud to be on the Advisory Board of J Street, a new PAC whose purpose is to be the political arm of the pro-Israel, pro-peace movement. In a state where firearms outnumber people, there must be regulation of the sale and distribution of handgun ammunition. It is easier to purchase handgun ammunition than it is a package of cigarettes, a can of spray paint, or some allergy medicines! Bullets are ending up in guns in the wrong hands across California and we have no idea who is selling this dangerous product. Currently, not a single California state-wide agency tracks who is buying or selling bullets. AB 2062 would require handgun ammunition vendors, by 2009, to acquire a DOJ-issued Handgun Ammunition Vendor's License. Additionally, this bill would require all handgun ammunition purchasers to undergo a thorough background check and acquire a Handgun Ammunition Purchase Permit. The North American Reform community is being asked to quickly raise $100,000 to enable the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism to provide services to the people of Sderot, who have suffered from rocket attacks for seven years but have in recent weeks become the focal point of Israel's enemies. For seven years, Hamas, backed by Iran, has launched rockets on Sderot. To appreciate the extent of these attacks, recall that in the 1991 Gulf War, Saddam Hussein succeeded in hitting all of Israel with a total of 39 rockets. A few weeks ago, Hamas sent 40 rockets into Sderot in the space of a single day. The residents of Sderot have paid a terrible price. Some have died in the rocket attacks. The children of the city are traumatized, sometimes unable to go to school, often unable to sleep at night. Businesses have been forced to close repeatedly. Surely the citizens of the town are entitled to the best defenses, social services, and support that the Jewish people can provide... How can we help? The Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism – the Reform movement in Israel – has been providing services to the people of Sderot. It would like to continue and expand these services, but requires our assistance to do so. The Union for Reform Judaism has committed to raise $100,000 from our congregations to fund assistance programs for Sderot by the Israeli Reform movement and other organizations. The situation will certainly continue to deteriorate with Gaza experiencing a 24% electricity deficit coupled with rolling blackouts leaving children in the dark as long as 12 hours per day. Hospitals have reduced their services to only urgent care patients as their fuel supplies run dangerously low. Steven Spielberg Pulls Out of Beijing Olympics Because of Darfur In a press release issued February 12th , Steven Spielberg formally ended his involvement as an artistic consultant for the 2008 Summer Olympics in China. He cited the ongoing genocide in Darfur and China's complicity as the reasons to forego this unique opportunity. Spielberg wrote: "I find that my conscience cannot allow me to continue with business as usual. At this point, my time and energy must be spent not on Olympic ceremonies, but on doing all I can to help bring an end to the unspeakable crimes against humanity that continue to be committed in Darfur."

Fight emails that fuel hatred! Dear Friends, I was recently made aware of a "chain email" that reported that all British schools have stopped teaching the Holocaust because of fears of anti-Semitic responses from Muslim students. The email is false! I use "Snopes.com" to help me sort the wheat from the chaff in the many emails I receive and suggest we all do the same. Let's not be a part of fueling hatred and animosity by assuming everything we receive, even from people we know, is true. If you find that an email is false, reply to the person who sent it with the correct information and tell them to do the same to whoever sent it to them. Not only should we not send these vicious lies forward, we should do everything we can to REVERSE the chain!
